Choosing a walk-behind tiller: strip width, engine and tine layout

The tillage pages cover walk-behind rotary tillers and cultivators for gardens, beds, orchard rows and small plots, all self-powered. A buyer usually sorts them by the strip to be worked and the engine behind it: light two-stroke mini tillers for narrow beds, four-stroke front-tine machines for wider plots, a rear-tine design for heavier ground, and one battery-electric machine. Width and depth decide whether the tiller fits your rows; engine size and drive decide how it copes with your soil.

The lightest group runs on small two-stroke engines. Yongkang Oujia Bao Industry & Trade lists the OJB-950 mini tiller with a 43 cc engine of 1.25 kW, working a 36 cm strip at 10–17 cm depth. Yongkang Cosmos Machinery, mainly a snow-equipment builder, offers the C-T206 mini tiller with a 52cc IE44F-5 engine rated at 2.2HP, a 30cm width, 10–15cm depth and 15.4kg net mass. Yongkang Tosfl Technology has the narrow TF-GT006 cultivator, 51.2 cc and 1.4 kW over a 300 mm width and 100–150 mm depth, and the TF-GT010 raised-intake cultivator, 63.3 cc and 2.0 kW over 430 mm, whose air cleaner sits on the handlebar and breathes through a long hose to keep dust away from the engine.

Four-stroke front-tine machines step up in width. Ningbo Sinharbour Garden Machinery quotes the HG60T rotary tiller with a BS500E 140 cc engine of 2.03 kW at 3000 rpm, 600 mm width, 260 mm depth and 32.6 kg net; the model page breadcrumb reads HG36T, so order by the HG60T name. Ningbo Daye Power Machinery lists the DAYEE DY360-161PT-00 with a DY1P65FC engine of 161 cc, one forward gear, 360 mm width and 260 mm depth. TOSFL's belt-driven TF-GT007 cultivator carries a 163 cc, 5.5 HP overhead-valve engine across 800 mm at 200–300 mm depth.

Zhejiang Turbo Garden Machinery covers the widest spread. Its six-group petrol rotary tiller appears in the English catalogue as TB60T1, TB60T1B, TB60T3 and TB60T3B, each 600 mm wide with its own engine, and Turbo offers to customise engine, dimensions and appearance. The TB85TR1 reverse tiller uses an LB170F engine of 212 cc and 4.8 kW, comes in 360, 600 or 800 mm widths with six blade groups and up to 100–250 mm depth, and takes optional cage wheels, single- and double-sided ploughs and a potato plough. For heavier ground, the Turbo rear-tine tiller sets twelve 350 mm tines behind a wheeled frame, turning at 190 rpm over a 483 mm strip, with a 212 cc OHV engine and 203 mm depth adjusted in 41 mm steps.

Ningbo Nongbang Agricultural Machinery builds battery-electric and tracked rotary tillers. Its NB-80 electric rotary tiller was seen doing tillage and ditching by a Ningbo science association visiting in December 2023, with a self-levelling rotary unit that reacts to hard objects in the soil. It is built for tracked work in small plots such as greenhouses and orchards; ask Nongbang for the current build, its dimensions, its battery package and a field trial on your own ground.

Whatever the group, specify the tiller as one configuration: engine model and displacement, starting method, working width, depth range, blade or tine set and any attachments. Several makers list more than one width or engine under a single family, so the order should name the exact catalogue row and carry a parts list for the blades and wearing items that belong to it.

Compare the right fields

Selection fieldWhat to establish
Plot and stripBed or row width, plot size and access, matched to the working width.
Depth and soilRequired tilling depth and soil type, against the listed depth range.
Engine and power sourceEngine model, two-stroke, four-stroke or battery, displacement, rated power and starting method.
Drive and tinesFront-tine, rear-tine or reverse gear, belt or direct drive, blade groups and tine diameter.
Attachments and sparesPloughs, cage wheels and the blade and wear-part list for the exact model.

Read competing quotations on the same basis

Compare quotations on machines that work the same strip. Put width and depth range first, then engine model, displacement and rated power, then drive type: direct, belt or reverse gear. Check that each price covers the same blade or tine set and the same attachments, since Turbo's options and the TB85TR1 widths change the build. Where a maker quotes a custom engine or width, ask for a signed specification sheet for that exact build, and ask every supplier for a soil demonstration or trial on ground like yours before a volume order.
