Wood chippers, stump grinders, log trailers and winches for farms and orchards

How to specify branch capacity and feed systems, stump grinder depth, trailer load and crane reach, winch pull and rope, PTO or engine drive, and the safety documents to request with each quote.

Start from the wood you need to move

Pruning waste, old orchard stumps and windblown timber are three different jobs, and the garden and forestry machines that handle them are bought on different numbers. Before asking for prices, write down the thickest branch you prune each season, how many stumps you clear a year and how far logs travel to the yard. A small orchard may only need a chipper and a chainsaw such as the Remo RM-CS3800H or the NONGKE NK-8820, with a HAIDAO RHBS-402FC2 pole saw for high limbs. A woodlot adds a trailer, a crane and a winch.

On steep orchard rows, moving fruit, prunings and tools can be the bigger task. Ningbo Lihao Machinery supplies rail systems for that, and the MF-200M orchard monorail transporter is quoted as an installed track, so give the maker your row length and slope rather than a single machine order.

Chipper branch capacity and feed systems

Every chipper is sold with a maximum branch diameter. Ask how it was set: for green or seasoned wood, softwood or hardwood, and at what feed rate. Feeding material larger than the maker specifies is a common cause of jams and kickback [1], so size the machine to your thickest regular branch with some margin.

Small electric shredders such as the Superpower CPY0130 electric chipper shredder suit light prunings close to a socket; Jiashan Superpower Tools also builds log splitters for the timber that follows. Petrol and tractor units such as the Speedy SPY-10 branch chipper or the CXC-701-1E orchard branch chipper from Zhejiang Changxu take thicker wood in the field. On larger machines, hydraulic feed rollers pull the branch in at a steady rate; on gravity-fed units the operator pushes the branch. Ask which system is fitted, how the roller speed adjusts and whether the rollers slow automatically when the engine bogs down.

Chipper safety features to put in the specification

The infeed rollers and the cutting disc or drum are the most dangerous parts of any chipper [1]. Regulators recommend a long reach from the chute edge to the rollers, chute side panels high enough to stop a person reaching in, and a bump bar along the chute that stops the rollers when pressed by the body [1]. Put these in your enquiry as named items, along with the position of the bar for your chute height and whether the cutter is behind an interlocked guard.

Ask also how long the disc runs on after shutdown, since an unclutched disc can take minutes to stop [1], and request the maker's procedure for locking the disc during blade changes. Good practice is to feed butt first from the side and to use a push stick at least 1.5 m long for short material [1]; a well-designed chute and table make that easy.

Stump grinder cutting depth and reach

A stump grinder is compared on three distances: how far below ground the cutting wheel reaches, how high above ground it can start, and how wide it sweeps side to side without moving the machine. Below-ground depth decides whether you can replant in the same spot or run a mower over the site. For the Speedy SPY-SG15 stump grinder, or any rival, ask for those three figures, the wheel diameter, the number and type of teeth, and the price and lead time of a replacement tooth set.

Wheel guards and a debris curtain matter because chips leave the wheel at speed. Ask what guarding ships with the machine and whether the wheel stops when the operator releases the controls. Mark buried pipes and cables before grinding.

Log trailers: load rating and crane reach

Jiaxing Scandi Machinery builds ATV and tractor log trailers, cranes and winches. For a trailer such as the Scandi 4W-A01A log trailer, ask for the rated payload, the empty weight, the bunk width and the braking arrangement, and check that the towing vehicle can control the loaded trailer on your steepest track.

Cranes are rated by reach and by the load the crane can lift at each reach; capacity falls as the boom extends. For a unit such as the SCANDI Grapple Crane 450 log trailer, request the load chart, the slewing angle, the grapple opening and the hydraulic flow the crane needs from the tractor. In Great Britain, machines fitted with log loaders count as lifting equipment, with duties for regular inspection by a competent person and, in many cases, thorough examination [3]. Ask for a lifting schedule in the manual so your inspector knows what to check.

Winch pulling force and rope

Winches are rated by line pull in tonnes or kilonewtons; one tonne of pull is close to 9.8 kN [4]. On drum winches the published figure is usually measured with the drum half full, so the pull changes as rope pays out [4]. A pulley block can multiply pulling force: the mechanical advantage equals the number of rope lengths running to and from the moving block [4].

The system is only as strong as its weakest component, so the rope, blocks, shackles and chokers must have a safe working load that matches the winch [4]. Winching equipment carries a built-in safety factor, commonly three to five times its safe working load, to absorb wear and shock loading [4]. Never pay the rope out completely, because the anchor point on the drum is not built to carry load [4]. For the SCANDI 4W-A07 log winch, ask for rated pull, rope diameter and length, rope construction, the minimum turns to keep on the drum and the brake type.

PTO drive or its own engine

Tractor-mounted chippers, winches and cranes take power from the PTO or the tractor hydraulics, which keeps the price down if you already own a suitable compact tractor. Self-powered units with their own engine move freely behind an ATV or by hand. Check the PTO speed the machine needs and the tractor power the maker recommends.

PTO shafts turn at 540 or 1,000 rpm, fast enough to wrap clothing and limbs before anyone can react [2]. Ask for a complete driveline guard, a shield that spins freely on its bearings, and a master shield on the tractor side [2]. Ask what overload protection, such as a shear bolt or slip clutch, is fitted and how it is set [2].

Safety documents to request

For the European Union, machinery placed on the market must come with an EU declaration of conformity, CE marking and instructions users can understand [5]. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces the Machinery Directive from 20 January 2027 and allows instructions to be supplied in digital form [5]. Ask the maker which rules the declaration names, which harmonised standards were applied, and for the manual in your market language.

Alongside that, request the noise figures, the warning decal set, the parts list with wear parts priced, and the service intervals. Wuyi Speedy Garden Machinery, Changxu and Scandi each cover several of these machines, so one combined enquiry can settle the paperwork for a full orchard or woodlot package.
