Kawasaki KJ4N Ride-On Tea Harvester

The Kawasaki KJ4N is a ride-on tea harvesting and trimming machine from Zhejiang Kawasaki, running on iron tracks that can be configured to the garden. It cuts an 1800 mm swath, but the whole machine is 3200 mm wide and weighs 1370 kg without fuel. A Yanmar 3TNV76 diesel rated at 16.4 kW drives it, and Kawasaki gives a work rate of 10 a/h that varies with garden conditions. Leaf is blown into bags. Use the figures below to survey your rows and access routes, then agree a trial on a section of your own garden before ordering.

Survey your tea rows and access routes

On tracks, the KJ4N picks and trims in one pass. Kawasaki does not publish track adjustment, slope limits, turning radius or ground pressure. Send a garden drawing with your enquiry, then ask the questions below.

Garden featureWhat to send and ask
Tea canopy and rowsMeasure canopy shape, height and row spacing. Ask for the KJ4N cutting geometry, its adjustment range, and the row layout Kawasaki recommends.
Headlands and turnsGive headland sizes and obstacles. Ask for a turning-envelope drawing and a demonstration of how the machine turns.
Access and transportNote the narrowest gate, route width, loading point and transport limits. Ask which dimensions apply once the machine is set for transport.
Ground and gradientsDescribe the ground and slopes. Ask Kawasaki to confirm in writing the operating limits and to assess your site.

1800 mm cut, 3200 mm machine

Kawasaki's table gives 1800 mm as the effective cutting width and 3200 mm as the overall width. Use 3200 mm for gates, routes and field layout. The overall width, in turn, says nothing about how wide a canopy the cutter can take.

Ask for an outline drawing of the working and transport layouts, track positions and cutter adjustment. Kawasaki should then confirm the clearance and row spacing that work for your garden. For a second riding machine to compare on the same garden survey, look at the Jiuqi 4CJC-1800 Riding Tea Harvester and Pruner. Where gates or narrow sections cannot take a 3200 mm machine, ask about an electric harvester such as the Meihui MH8866 for those rows.

Published specifications

Read each value with its stated conditions, and ask the manufacturer for any limit not listed here.

SpecificationPublished valueMeaning / limit
Engine modelYanmar 3TNV76 [1]Ask for the nameplate and Yanmar support documents for the engine actually fitted.
Rated engine output16.4 kW at 2800 min⁻¹ [1]Listed as 16.4/2800 under power and speed. Fuel use per hectare and harvesting throughput are separate figures to request.
Engine configurationFour-stroke, vertical inline, water-cooled, three-cylinder diesel; 1.115 L [1]Ask for the emissions approval your market requires and a fuel-consumption curve.
Fuel tank16 L; diesel [1]Running time depends on fuel use per hour, which Kawasaki does not publish. Ask for it.
Machine dimensions2970 × 3200 × 1930 mm (length × width × height) [1]Overall size. Ask for drawings of the transport layout, turning envelope and working clearance.
Machine mass1370 kg, excluding fuel [1]Add the operator, collected leaf and accessories for the working weight; ask Kawasaki for the full loaded figure.
Effective cutting width1800 mm [1]The cutter width. The machine is 3200 mm wide overall. Ask Kawasaki which row spacing it suits.
Published work rate10 a/h, varying with tea-garden conditions [1]That is 1000 m²/h, or 0.1 ha/h. Ask what garden and method the figure comes from.
Leaf collectionAir-conveyed collection; 20 kg × 2 bags × 6 cycles = 240 kg [1]240 kg is the total over six bag cycles. Ask for the bag-change method and the most the machine can carry at once.
StartingElectric motor starting [1]Ask for the battery rating, cold-start limits and battery service needs.

What 10 a/h means in your garden

Kawasaki says the work rate varies with tea-garden conditions. The unit a is the are, and 10 a/h equals 1000 square metres per hour, or 0.1 hectares per hour.

The page does not say what canopy, number of passes, leaf condition, bag changes, turning time or test length the figure is based on. Ask for a trial on your own garden that records those conditions and the start and end times, and plan daily output from that result.

When you compare workloads, split the time into cutting, turning, bag changes, travel and stoppages, and agree which parts count. Also agree how the collected leaf and the trimmed canopy will be judged, since area covered is only half of a good harvest.

Bag changes and getting leaf to processing

The KJ4N blows cut leaf into bags. Kawasaki writes its capacity as a 20 kg bag, two bags and six cycles, totalling 240 kg. Plan the collection routine around that. Once the leaf reaches the factory, withering and fixation take over; our guide to tea processing machinery by stage covers each step.

  1. Check the bag layout

Ask for bag positions, size, fastening and the maximum load per bag on the quoted unit.

  2. Plan swapping and transfer

Describe how full bags leave the row and reach processing. Ask Kawasaki to show the bag-change steps from the manual.

  3. Time handling in the trial

Record bag changes and transfer stops alongside cutting time. Ask how leaf condition is checked after air conveying for your processing needs.

  4. List the starter kit

Name the bags, spare parts, instructions and handling accessories in the quotation.

What to record in a garden trial

Tie the trial to the exact machine build and a surveyed section of your garden. Agree these records with Kawasaki before the machine arrives. Tea and crop harvesters from other makers are grouped on our harvesting page.

Trial topicRecord to request
Configuration and accessMachine and engine identity, cutter and track setup, outline drawing, and confirmation that your route and rows fall within Kawasaki's limits.
Harvesting resultGarden section, canopy and leaf condition, measured area, agreed timing, and the quality of collected leaf and trimmed canopy.
Collection workflowActual bag loads, how bags are swapped, handling stops and how full bags are received.
Training and maintenanceA demonstration to Kawasaki's manual, operator training, adjustment checks, engine and cutter manuals and a parts list.
Delivery and supportTransport setup, unloading instructions, included accessories, parts supply and written warranty and service duties.

Engine support and cutter handover

The engine table gives a Yanmar 3TNV76, diesel fuel, water cooling and a 16 L tank. Ask for the nameplate and service manual of the engine fitted, its maintenance schedule, fuel use and running time, and the emissions documents your market needs.

The cutting, trimming and collection systems need their own parts and adjustment data. Ask for part numbers for blades, tracks and collection parts, the consumables list, allowed adjustments and the training included. Kawasaki lists sales and after-sales contacts; ask for response times, local service cover, warranty length and parts stock in writing.

Tell Kawasaki your delivery country and harvest season so support and lead time can be agreed in the contract.

Buyer questions

Can I use 1800 mm to check if a gate is wide enough?

No. 1800 mm is the cutting width; the machine is 3200 mm wide overall. Ask for a drawing of the transport and working layouts. [1]

Does the KJ4N carry 240 kg of leaf at once?

Kawasaki writes 20 kg × 2 bags × 6 cycles. Ask for the actual bag load and how bags are swapped. [1]

How many hours does the 16 L tank last?

Kawasaki does not publish fuel consumption. Ask for a measured figure under your working conditions. [1]

Can the KJ4N work on slopes?

The KJ4N page gives no slope or ground limit. Ask Kawasaki for the operating limits in writing and an assessment of your garden. [1]
