Turbo Gasoline Scarifier

Turbo's hand-push gasoline scarifier takes swappable spring-wire and steel-blade cylinders for removing thatch from turf. It has six height settings from -15 to +12 mm, a 2500 no-load blade speed and a 45 L collection bag. Turbo's website and catalogue give different engine sizes (212 or 223 cc), working widths (450 or 440 mm) and steel-blade counts (nine or thirteen), so get one matched specification on the quotation. This is a thatch machine; a compacted lawn or a crop bed needs a different tool.

Build my procurement brief

Thatch removal or core aeration: name the job

The University of Minnesota Extension describes thatch as a layer of interwoven plant material between green turf and the soil. It treats removal with knife-like or spring-like tines as one job and aerification, which lifts soil cores to the surface, as another. The guide is general turf advice and does not cover this Turbo machine.

Turbo shows spring-wire and steel-blade cylinders. There is no hollow coring tine or seedbed tilling attachment, and the “Ventilation” blade wording refers to these cylinders. If your problem is compacted soil or a crop bed, choose a machine built for that.

For lawn maintenance, describe the grass and site and what you want to remove or treat. Timing and depth depend on your local turf conditions; follow a local turf assessment and the machine instructions.

Published specifications

Read each value with its stated conditions, and ask the manufacturer for any limit not listed here.

SpecificationPublished valueMeaning / limit
MachineGasoline scarifier; hand-push; no machine code [1] [2] [3]Ask Turbo for the current machine and cylinder reference to put on the order.
EngineWebsite table 212 cc; website image 223 cc; catalogue 223 cc [2] [3] [4]The sources differ. Power is given as 4.0–4.5kW without a rated speed. Ask which engine your build has.
Working widthWebsite 450 mm; catalogue 440 mm; both use a 16-inch table label [2] [3] [4]Two millimetre figures under one inch label. Ask for the actual swath of the machine quoted.
CylindersWebsite: 26 wire teeth/9 steel blades, 400 mm; catalogue: 26/13, 440 mm [2] [3]The wire-tooth count matches; width and steel-blade count differ. Ask for cylinder part numbers.
Height settings-15/-10/-5/0/6/+12 mm; six positions [2] [3]Ask what surface the settings are measured from and how they relate to cylinder wear.
Blade speed and bag2500 no-load blade speed; 45 L bag [2] [3]The catalogue labels the speed rpm and the website rpm/min. Both are no-load figures. The bag size is a volume.
Packing and order quantity45 kg gross; 74×65×53 cm carton; 270 pcs MOQ(40HQ) [2] [3] [6]Packed figures. Ask for net mass and quantity terms. The folding diagram gives separate sizes.

Where the website and catalogue differ

Turbo's current online graphics and its current catalogue give different figures for the same scarifier. Ask Turbo to quote one matched build. Turbo's TBE corded mowers and its self-propelled walk-behind line trimmer handle the cutting side of the same lawn routine.

ItemWhat each source says and what to ask
Engine displacementWebsite table 212 cc; the engine picture 223 cc; catalogue 223 cc. Ask for the engine and machine reference on your quote.
Machine working widthWebsite title and table 450 mm; catalogue 440 mm. Both tables put 16 inches next to the millimetre figure. Ask for the swath in writing.
Cylinder working widthWebsite cylinder pictures say 400 mm; the catalogue gives 440 mm for both. Ask for the cylinder width separately from the machine swath.
Steel-blade countWebsite nine steel blade teeth; catalogue thirteen. Ask for the part number and revision.
Your quotationOne engine, machine, cylinder and height specification that matches. If you want a combination of options, ask whether it has been built and tested.

Spring-wire and steel-blade cylinders

Turbo presents the two cylinders as swappable. They share rotation diameter and some material sizes, while width and steel-blade count vary between sources.

CylinderTurbo's figures and what to ask
Spring-wire26 wire teeth, 2.2 mm wire and 180 mm rotation diameter in both sources. Width 400 mm on the website, 440 mm in the catalogue. Ask for the wire grade and part number.
Steel-blade2 mm blade thickness and 180 mm rotation diameter in both. Website 9 teeth and 400 mm, catalogue 13 and 440 mm. Ask which set you will receive.
Changing cylindersAsk for the cylinder and retainer part numbers and the replacement instructions, including tools needed.
Turf resultTry the chosen cylinder on your turf and agree the result you expect.

Height settings, blade speed and collection

The table lists six height positions with negative, zero and positive values. Ask Turbo what they are measured from and how they relate to ground level and cylinder wear.

Turbo figureWhat to clarify
-15/-10/-5/0/6/+12 mmUse the settings with their signs. Ask for the reference plane and adjustment instructions, and start shallow on a new lawn.
2500 no-load blade speedA no-load figure. The website writes rpm/min. Ask for speed under load for each cylinder.
Hand-push travelThe machine is pushed by hand. Ask about slope limits.
45 L collection bagBag volume. How often it fills depends on how much thatch comes out; check this in a trial.
Starting and oil alertThe catalogue table says recoil; another callout offers one-button electric start and a low-oil alert. Ask whether a battery is included and what the alert does.

Trial, packing and spare parts

Run a demonstration with the agreed cylinder and build on your own turf, following current instructions. Record what comes out, the surface left behind, how often the bag is emptied and the settings used.

  1. Fix the configuration

Settle engine, swath, cylinder tooth count, width and part numbers. Keep the agreed specification with the sample and for later orders.

  2. Agree the result and debris

Decide what removal you want and how cuttings are handled. The university guide notes that vertical work can produce a lot of debris.

  3. Storage and carton

The website shows 115 cm by 110 cm working and 85 cm by 55 cm folded in side view, without full width. The carton is 74×65×53 cm. Ask for packing and assembly steps.

  4. Mass and order

45 kg gross and 270 pcs MOQ(40HQ) are printed. Ask for net mass, pack contents, quantity terms and loading.

  5. Spare parts

Name the spring and steel cylinders, wear parts and engine documents, and ask for stock and response times.

Buyer questions

Is the engine 212 cc or 223 cc?

The website table says 212 cc; the website image and catalogue say 223 cc. Ask Turbo which engine your build has. [2] [3] [4]

Are 440, 450 and 400 mm the same width?

No. 450 and 440 mm are machine widths from different sources, and 400 mm is the website's cylinder width. Ask for both swath and cylinder width. [2] [3]

Does it core-aerate my lawn?

It comes with spring-wire and steel-blade cylinders for thatch. Coring needs hollow tines, which Turbo does not list. [2] [3] [5]

How deep do the negative settings go?

Turbo gives the values without saying what they are measured from. Ask for the reference and try them on your turf. [2] [3]

What does the University of Minnesota guide add?

General advice on thatch and the difference between vertical removal and core aeration. It does not test Turbo machines. [5]
